Homework hints, tips,
and reminders... Fluency, spelling, and math fact skills can only be increased through regular daily practice. It is impossible
to master a skill by cramming lots of practice into one day, while skipping practice on other days. Mastery requires lots
and lots of repetition! Homework,
Practice, and Review: Daily practice and review of basic facts, computation, and math concepts are important for all students.
Students who struggle often need increased practice and review broken into smaller chunks throughout the day. Schedule time for independent reading and spelling practice daily, as well. Vary practice
format for spelling words by grouping words by spelling patterns, highlighting troublesome parts of words, posting them on
a mirror, using refrigerator magnets, etc. Repetition is the key! Find what works for your child and keep doing it!
Plan for success! Help your child plan for success
by scheduling homework and practice time just as you would sports practice or a doctor's appointment. Schedule time each
day and write it on the calendar. Schedule 15-20 min. for grades K-2, 30-45 min. for grades 3-5, and 60-90 min. for grades
6-8. Stick to the schedule. Whether your child brings home "homework" or not there are always things to practice
- spelling, AR reading, basic fact practice, and math computation practice . The key to effective homework and practice is
to help your child learn to schedule homework time each day and stick to it!
