The Learning Center Plan for Success!!!!
Help your child be a successful learner by scheduling homework and practice time just as you would
a sports practice or doctor’s appointment. Set aside time each day and write it on the calendar. Schedule 15-20 minutes
for grades K-2, 30-45 minutes for grades 3-5, and 60-90 minutes for grades 6-8 at least 5 days each week.
This time allows for homework completion, review of concepts for test preparation,
and practice of skills that must be mastered through repetition – spelling, sight words, independent reading, reading
fluency, basic fact practice, and math computation practice. The key to effective homework and practice is to develop a routine
and stick to it.

Do you know how your child can become a better reader? Encourage him/her to spend more time reading. It sounds so
simple, but it is true. Research shows that students who read more become better readers. Encourage your child to read materials
at his/her independent reading level at least five days per week. This also helps your child reach his/her monthly reading
goals in the classroom! Math fact mastery is crucial to your child's
educational development. The only way to master basic facts is through practice, practice, and more practice. Your child should
practice basic facts daily at home and at school. Ask your child to practice by first saying the problems and the answers
out loud while you listen for accuracy. Next, have your child practice saying just the answers. Finally, your child should
write the answers on his/her practice sheet as fast as he/she can. Don't have time? Consider keeping copies of your child's reading and basic fact materials in the car. Time in the
car can be used for spelling practice, fact practice, and reading!
